What Am I Pouring From?
A poem by Chad Nathan
On finding true purpose…
For all my life
I found my purpose in being “useful”
I thought if I worked hard enough
Helped enough people
Gave enough encouragement
Then I would be fulfilling my purpose
I had to leave my mark on the world
People had to notice if I disappeared
So I kept pouring out
But I never stopped long enough
To ask myself what I was pouring from
I knew how to talk about God
Better than I knew how to sit with Him
I knew how to work for Him
Better than I knew how to abide in Him
I was trying to pour from an empty well
I was trying to give peace
Without living in it
If people needed my work
Then I felt valuable
But then I started thinking
About if there was no audience
If it was just me and God
The meaning of my life then
That’s when it hit me
The purpose of my life
Was never to be important to the world
It was to walk with God
To know him
And to love Him

“I was trying to pour from an empty well” is the line that stayed with me.
So many of us learned how to serve before we learned how to sit with God. This was beautifully written and deeply needed.
